Obituary for Marian Louise Maki

MARQUETTE, MI - Marian Louise Maki, age 85, of Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday, January 28, 2018, at the Norlite Nursing Center, in the loving care of her family and caregivers of Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice.
Born April 18, 1932, in Marquette, a daughter of Gunnard and Hazel (Anderson) Wallenstein, Marian was raised in Marquette and graduated from Graveraet High School, Class of 1950. While in high school, she was a member of the Conservation Club, an interest she held for the rest of her life. On September 15, 1951, Marian married Arthur Maki and together the couple made their lifelong home in Marquette where they raised three daughters. For a time, Marian was employed in various jobs while serving as wife, mother, and homemaker. Her interests centered around her family. She was a talented baker and cook, loved knitting, making mittens and afghans for family and friends, camping, listening to country western music, collecting antiques, especially tea pots, and always had a pot of coffee and desserts for friends that may stop in. Her lifelong passion was bird watching and feeding the birds that frequented her yard on the Dead River. She was a member of the Audubon Society and took part in assisting with bird banding and counting. For many years, she took in injured birds at her home and local residents often called her for such cases. She loved all that nature had to offer, and enjoyed time spent at the family camp. In earlier years she served as a Girl Scout leader.
Survivors include her daughters, Colleen Maki of Marquette, Susan (Greg Taube) Maki of St. Paul, MN, Judy Maki Smith of Marquette, son-in-law, Tom Smith of Essexville; her grandchildren, Ian O'Loughlin, Conor (Melanie) O'Loughlin, Aila O'Loughlin, Joelle Maki, Ashley (Jack) McDonough, Sarah Smith; great-grandchildren, Fiona, Freya, Ciaran, Dubhlainn, Shea, and Gray; a sister-in-law, Muriel Wallenstein of Ft Wayne, IN; many in-laws; nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur in 2014; and a brother, Robert Wallenstein.
Graveside services will be held at the Park Cemetery in early summer, and will be announced.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Chocolay Raptor Center, 146 Lakewood Lane, Marquette, MI 49855.
