Obituary for Lloyd W. "Blackie" Black

MARQUETTE, MI - Lifelong Marquette resident, Lloyd William "Blackie" Black, age 68, entered eternal life Thursday morning, November 2, 2017, at his home, in the loving, comforting care of his family and the caregivers of Lake Superior Hospice.
Born March 21, 1949, in Marquette, the son of Roy and Doris (Jorgensen) Black, Lloyd attended Bishop Baraga High School where he played football. Lloyd entered the US Army in October 1968 and on December 24, 1968, married Sharon Dauphinais at St. Christopher Catholic Church. Lloyd served in Vietnam with the 4th Infantry Division and, following his honorable discharge, returned to Marquette. He was employed for a time as a mechanic before working for the Soo Line Railroad for ten years as a brakeman. He then began an over fourteen year career with the Marquette Area Public Schools as a custodian/bus driver, retiring in the late 90's. Lloyd was a classic car buff, enjoyed hunting and woodworking. Lloyd was a staunch supporter of veterans and, over the years, assisted many veterans in securing their benefits. For over twenty years he served as the representative for the Marquette County Soldiers and Sailors Relief Fund. He belonged to UP Whitetails, the NRA, National Wild Turkey Federation, Jopling Post 44 of the American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380, was a lifetime member of the DAV, and a member of the former Moose Lodge. He was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church.
Lloyd is survived by his wife, Sharon Black; son, Shannon Black of Negaunee; his grandchildren, Kaila and Keegan Black; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Marcia (the late Robert) Houle.
The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Christopher Catholic Church on Friday, November 10, beginning at 10:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Friday with Rev. Greg Heikkala, pastor, as celebrant, assisted by Deacon Tom Moseley. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
