Obituary for John "Jack" C. Specker

MARQUETTE, MI - John “Jack” C. Specker, age 97, entered eternal life Monday, February 5, 2018 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in the loving care of his family.
John was born on May 27, 1920 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Marquette, Michigan to John and Grace (Kroon) Specker. John grew up on Grove Street in Marquette on his parent’s farm. He often told stories about walking to the Washington Street farmer’s market, vegetables in tow, to sell freshly harvested goods. His lifelong love for golf began as a young child watching the Marquette Golf and Country Club being constructed on the property next to his family farm. John’s winter passion was ski jumping. In 1940, he took first place at the Kirlin Hill ski jumping tournament in Marquette. On August 28, 1943, John married Jean Derrie, and one week later was inducted into the United States Army as a locomotive engineer, assigned to the 712th Railway Operating Battalion. During WWII, he served in five countries in Europe and helped supply General George S. Patton during the Battle of the Bulge. After discharge from the Army, John was employed by the DSS & A and Soo Line Railroad until his retirement in June 1981.
John was an honorary member of the Marquette Golf and Country Club, American Legion Post 44, the Soo Line Railroad Historical and Technical Society and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. A proud veteran, he went to Washington DC on the Honor Flight in May 2013.
John is survived by his children, Barbara Specker Lawry, John Specker, Jr., Stephen (Diane) Specker; grandchildren, Edward (Vicky) Lawry, Stephen (Lisa) Lawry, David (Kelly) Lawry, Ben (Amanda) Specker, Courtney Specker, Tonya LaPorte, Dana LaPorte; brother, Paul E.
