Obituary for Antoinette M. Kovacich

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI - Antoinette M. “Toni” Kovacich, age 105, longtime Iron Mountain resident, entered eternal life Thursday, December 21, 2017, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming.
Born October 27, 1912, in Caltrano, Italy, a daughter of Anton and Angelina (Attocchi) DeMuri, Toni came to the United States with her family when she was about a year old. The family settled in Iron Mountain where her parents owned and operated a candy store and tavern on Iron Mountain’s North Side. As a young girl, she helped her parents and later, as a young women, moved to California for a brief time, helping out her aunt. Returning to Iron Mountain, she married John Kovacich on February 7, 1942 at Immaculate Conception Church. Together, the couple established a home and raised their son, Duane. Toni was employed with Perfix and later worked as a waitress at Jacobs Restaurant, and then part time in the summers at the A and W Root Beer Stand. For the ten years prior to her retirement, Toni was employed at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital as a dietary aide. She possessed a youthful spirit and even living into advanced age, did not consider herself necessarily “old”. She maintained the philosophy that one should mingle with people their own age and younger to help keep their own youth. She enjoyed life and was game for anything, the more spontaneous the better. However, her passion was dancing and she could still “cut a rug”, maybe a little slower, up to age 100. Age only slowed her, but didn’t stop her. Following her husband’s death, Toni did a little traveling. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and lifetime member of the Paisano Club, where she enjoyed celebrating her Italian heritage.
Toni is survived by her son, Duane (Mary) Kovacich of Hudson, FL; grandson, Duane (Cheryl) Kovacich and great-grandson, Ryan Kovacich of Byron Center, MI; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Toni was preceded in death by her husband, John; a grandson, Scott Kovacich; sisters, Rena Anderson, Mary Stockero, Jenny Koller, Doris Constantini, and Adeline DeJuliannie; and brothers, Gildo, Guido, and Geno DeMuri.
The family would like to express their appreciation to her special caregiver, June Turner, of Iron Mountain, the nursing staff at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility, and to Dr. Catherine Kroll for your loving, compassionate care of Toni and for the many kindnesses extended to the family. You all, by word and deed, added to the quality of Toni’s life. Thank you.
Friends may call at St. Christopher Catholic Church, Marquette, on Thursday, January 4, beginning at 11:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon Thursday with Rev. Greg Heikkala, pastor, as celebrant. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Activity Fund at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility, 200 Saginaw Street, Ishpeming, MI 49849.
